Flexible assessment settings

Please find the descriptions of all in-module flexible mode assessment settings below.

Kindly note that you need Edit content permission to access the Content editor.

Properties

Properties - general

Setting name

Description

Position

All elements have an assigned position number. Change this number to move the assessment to a different position in a module.

Required

By default, and in most cases, this should be set to Required.

Assessment can be Optional when learners can choose whether or not to attempt it, and we don't need to record the score on LMS.

If you are setting up a pre-assessment and want to report the score of the passed pre-assessment, select Required.

Title

Appears as a page title.

Assessment ID

Automatically generated and unique for this assessment.

Objective:

It shows available objectives.

Assign an objective to the assessment.

Attempts

Unlimited

Set the number of attempts available to the user.

Time limit

The assessment session terminates as soon as time elapses. Unanswered questions are marked Incorrect.

Remove correctly answered questions

Assessment results are carried over throughout all attempts until the assessment is complete.

NOTE: This is a new WIP feature. It supports regular assessments. It does not yet support gamified assessment

Cooling off period (days)

The number of days that a learner has to wait for the assessment to automatically unlock so they can retry it.

The lockout period does not include 'today'.

Description

Show immediate feedback

Immediate feedback reveals the correct answer after users submit their responses.

It includes MCQ explanation and ticks and crosses by the options, indicating correct and incorrect options.

If unticked, users will be taken to the next question right after Submitting their answer.

Show explanation in question-level feedback

If explanations are available, choose whether they display or not as soon as the user answers the question.

Explanations can also be set to display for correctly answered questions only.

If the explanations should show while taking the assessment, the 'Show immediate feedback' setting must be enabled.

Kindly note that the setting affects both - questions shown while taking the assessment and on the summary screen.

Show solution in question-level feedback

Choose whether the solution - tick and cross icons - displays or not as soon as the user answers the question.

There is also the option of showing the solution for correctly answered questions only.

If the solution should show while taking the assessment, the 'Show immediate feedback' setting must be enabled.

Kindly note that the setting affects both - questions shown while taking the assessment and on the summary screen.

Show question-level feedback on summary screen

Shows incorrectly answered questions on the summary screens - Retry, Passed or Failed.

Select 'When passed' to show them on the Passed summary screen only.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show summary screen'.

Control the type of feedback shown by adjusting the 'Show explanation in question-level feedback' and 'Show solution in question-level feedback' settings.

Please note this is shown only once. If the user refreshes the page or resumes the module, they won't see this data anymore.

Show all questions on summary screen

Display all the questions and selected responses in one list at the end of the assessment.

Please note that the 'Show question-level feedback on summary screen' setting must not be set to Never.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show summary screen'.

Please note this is shown only once. If the user refreshes the page or resumes the module, they won't see this data anymore.

Retain feedback on summary screen

When checked, peer-to-peer comparison, leaderboard, objectives, confidence and/or question-level feedback data is saved and available when the user revisits the assessment summary screen.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Don't show intro message upon revisiting'.

Score thresholds

Define custom score amounts that trigger custom summary screen messages instead of the default “pass”, “fail”, and “retry” messages.

Enter a desired percentage score value here. When adding more than one, start from the highest number and finish with the lowest, like this: 80,60,50,40

Add custom messages with feedback IDs into the relevant summary screen messages, for example:

Properties - tracking

Description

Pre-assessment (ignore assessment if failed, set module to complete if passed and remove Assessment objective)

Check this setting if it is a pre-assessment. It would then ignore the assessment if failed and set the module to complete if passed.

However, you must set up the objective manually:

  • Create an objective called Assessment.

  • Assign it to the final assessment.

  • In pre-assessment, select this objective under the 'Remove objectives when passed'

Report as Pre-Test (Skillcast LMS only)

Adds (pre-assessment) tag to the lesson status. The lesson status will be marked as "passed (pre-assessment)".

Always select for pre-assessment if the module is hosted on Skillcast LMS.

If the module is hosted on both Skillcast and third-party LMS, create two module versions - one for the Skillcast LMS with the setting ticked and another for the third-party LMS with the setting unticked.

Ignore this assessment if failed

If checked, the assessment will be absent from the module report if the user does not Pass.

Set module to complete if passed

If checked, then the module will be marked as complete if the learner passes this assessment.

Otherwise, it will take another condition (such as reaching the last page in the module, for example).

Score tracking

Correct responses / number of questions

Choose whether the learner's score will be tracked in terms of the points gained or the number of correctly answered questions in the LMS report.

Please note that the 'Enable points' setting must be ticked for the points option.

Track objective scores

It sets the SCORM objective to the LMS. It is the objective of the SCORM standard and not the in-module objective.

The SCORM objective name depends on the 'SCORM objective name' setting.

Track each attempt as a SCORM objective

If checked, this will write a separate score in your report for each attempt a learner makes at the assessment.

Properties - user experience

Scroll to explanation

Upon Submit the page would scroll to the explanation if it extends below the screen.

One click response

If checked, the learner will not need to select the submit button after choosing a response to a question – selecting the option will be enough to answer it.

It should be used with single correct option MCQs.

Hide submit button

If checked, the submit button will not appear until the learner has made a selection.

Show introduction screen

When checked, the first page of the assessment will show an Introduction message with a prompt to begin the assessment.

Otherwise, the first page will be the first question.

Show summary screen

When checked, the last page of the assessment will show a summary screen - Retry, Passed or Failed message - with an overview of the learner's score, and potentially their objective scores and other information.

Otherwise, the learner will leave the assessment after answering the final question.

Don't show intro message upon revisiting

If this is checked, then upon returning to the assessment (whether through reopening the course or navigating back to it), the learner will see the assessment summary screen.

If it isn't checked, then they will see the Introduction message upon returning to the assessment.

Show introduction message on retry

If checked, when the user selects the Retry button on the summary screen, they will be shown the introduction message with the Start assessment button.

Hide Menu Button

If checked, the module menu button will be hidden while the learner is in the assessment.

You may choose this if you want to prevent the learner from navigating away and checking the content for answers.

Hide Resources Button

If checked, the resources button will be hidden while the learner is in the assessment.

Hide Settings

If checked, the settings button will be hidden whilst the learner is in the assessment.

Properties - messages

Description

Introduction message

This is the first page of the module. Explain here how users can complete the assessment.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show introduction screen'.

Passed message

The message that appears on the summary screen when the learner passes the assessment.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show summary screen'.

Retry message

The message that appears on the summary screen when the learner fails the assessment but has more attempts available.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show summary screen'.

Failed message

The message that appears on the summary screen when the learner fails the assessment and has no more attempts available.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show summary screen'.

Questions solution message

The message that appears on the summary screen at the top of the list of questions.

It needs to be used in conjunction with the 'Show summary screen' and 'Show question-level feedback on summary screen' settings, which must NOT be set to Never.

Question Banks

Specify the number of Question Banks to be used per session.

Please note that the setting will be affected by the 'Always include" option in the Questions Banks. E.g.: if there are two Question Banks that are set to "Always include", you won't be able to select a number lower than 2 here.

The order in which questions are presented can be either randomised or reflective of the Question Bank order.

The Prescribed option needs to be used in conjunction with 'Group by question bank'.

If checked, questions from the same Bank will appear one after the other.

Otherwise, questions from different Banks will follow each other.

Always included

Appears as the Question Bank name in the Editor (not visible to learners).

See how many questions are in this Question Bank.

Specify the number of questions selected per session from this Bank.

Specify whether questions from this Bank will be included in every session.

New question bank

Create a new Question Bank by inputting the Question Bank name and selecting 'Update'.

Edit questions in Excel

Add new questions/Question Banks (or modify existing ones) and their settings using the Excel method.

Please be aware that improper use could break the assessment.

Completion

Allow retake when passed

If checked, the learner can take the assessment again, even after passing it, to aim for a higher score.

The module always reports the highest score.

Next button action when passed

Next page

Page ID

Enable or disable the Next button at the end of the assessment for Passed users.

You can also set up the Next button to transport the user to a specific page in the course (provided the page element has an Identifier).

Completion - close button

Show the Close Module Button on Pass or Fail

If checked, a 'Close Module' button displays at the end of the assessment when the learner has either passed or failed it. It does not display on the Retry screen.

It shows available objectives.

Select objectives that should be removed along with any content that has them assigned when the user passes the assessment.

It shows available objectives.

Select objectives that should be added along with any content that has them assigned when the user passes the assessment.

Set data variable - any

If a text value is put here, it will be written to the learner's session data when they complete the assessment.

It must be used in conjunction with the "Set data value - any" field.

Set data value - any

In conjunction with the "Set data variable - any" field, any value entered here (text or numerical) will be written to the learner's session data alongside the data variable.

Set data variable - passed

If a text value is put here, it will be written to the learner's session data when they pass the assessment.

It must be used in conjunction with the "Set data value - passed" field.

In conjunction with the "Set data variable - passed" field, any value entered here (text or numerical) will be written to the learner's session data alongside the data variable.

Set data variable - failed

If a text value is put here, it will be written to the learner's session data when they fail the assessment.

It must be used in conjunction with the "Set data value - failed" field.

In conjunction with the "Set data variable - failed" field, any value entered here (text or numerical) will be written to the learner's session data alongside the data variable.

Remove data variable - any

Any existing data variable named here will be removed from the learner's session data if they complete this assessment.

Remove data variable - passed

Any existing data variable named here will be removed from the learner's session data if they pass this assessment.

Remove data variable - failed

Any existing data variable named here will be removed from the learner's session data if they fail this assessment.

Gamification

Gamification - points

Description

Show points

If checked, the tally of accumulated points displays in the top right corner which updates as the user answers questions.

The collected points are also displayed at the end of the assessment.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Points per question', 'Points for correct bet' and 'Points for incorrect bet'.

Points per question

Enter the number of awarded points for a correct answer.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show points'.

Points for correct bet

Upon submitting a response for each question, the learner will be invited to 'bet' points on whether they think they are right or not.

If they are right, then they will be awarded a specific number of points as specified here.

Bets allow you to gauge the confidence of the learners in their answers.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show points'.

Points for incorrect bet

Upon submitting a response for each question, the learner will be invited to 'bet' points on whether they think they are right or not.

If they are wrong, then they will lose a specific number of points specified here.

Bets allow you to gauge the confidence of the learners in their answers.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show points'.

Track bets using interaction weighting

If checked, the bets won/lost are recorded in the interactions report.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show points', 'Points for correct bet' and 'Points for incorrect bet'.

Gamification - lives

Lose a life for each incorrect answer

Lose a life for each incorrect bet

Give the user a fixed number of 'lives' represented by hearts at the top of the assessment pages.

Choose whether to enable lives, deduct a life for every incorrect answer, or deduct a life for every incorrect bet.

The assessment ends immediately once all lives are lost.

Number of lives

Either choose to base the number of lives on your Assessment pass mark (e.g. if it is 80% for a 10-question assessment, then the learner will receive three lives) or select a specific number.

Displays the user's score in percentage at the end of the assessment calculated either in terms of the number of points won or the number of correctly answered questions.

Please note that the 'Enable points' setting must be ticked for the points option.

Show previous best score on summary screen

If the assessment allows for multiple attempts, then you can choose to display the learner's best score (so far) on the summary screen, along with their most recent score.

Gamification - leaderboard

Description

Show peer-to-peer comparison (Skillcast Portal only)

Show the player's rank (e.g., 10 of 140); the highest, average, and lowest score obtained by players overall; and the total number of players.

It only works if using Skillcast LMS.

Please note that the testing results should be removed before the rollout.

Show leader board (Skillcast Portal only)

Display a leaderboard of the top scores from all learners who have taken the assessment.

The number of participants should be higher or equal to the top scores selected.

If checked, only the user's name will be displayed on the leaderboard, and colleagues will appear as 'Player'.

It only works if using Skillcast LMS.

Leaderboard message

The message appears on the assessment summary screen above the leaderboard.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show leader board (Skillcast Portal only)'.

Gamification - confidence

Show confidence section

Overall confidence

Learning objectives confidence

Show the confidence level of the user across the whole assessment or show a breakdown of the confidence level related to each question bank/learning objective.

You can select one or both options.

Confidence display limit (number)

Control the data displayed on the confidence bars (e.g. if set to ‘5’, the percentage that is smaller than 5 [and, therefore, negligible] will not display.

It needs to be used in conjunction with the 'Show confidence section'.

Select the unit used for the confidence bar data.

Gamification - objectives

Show objectives on summary screen

If checked, it displays the percentage score (as a bar) for each Question Bank at the end of the assessment.

It also shows the number of questions asked and answered correctly next to each Question Bank.

Objectives need to be assigned to the Question Banks and questions.

Add text here to explain what the learning objectives mean and what the users should do if they spot any weak areas.

It needs to be used in conjunction with the 'Show summary screen' and 'Show objectives on summary screen'.

Gamification - question timer

Question time limit (seconds)

Enter a number of seconds here. After these have elapsed, the question will be marked incorrect if not answered in time.

Time based points

Assign bonus points per question. Points available deplete with each passing second, so the faster the user answers, the more bonus points they get.

Needs to be used in conjunction with 'Show points' and 'Question time limit (seconds)'.

Question timer

Choose whether to include an animated graphic of a donut or to show the countdown only.

It needs to be used in conjunction with 'Question time limit (seconds)'.

This allows you to either use padding with the assessment messages or not use it.

Hide title bar

If checked, the assessment title bar is hidden in the assessment.

Hide in Menu

If checked then the assessment will be hidden from the menu. However, please avoid it for better accessibility.

Title bar colour

The background colour of the assessment title bar can be defined here (as a hexadecimal value without the hashtag).

Title text colour

The colour of the assessment title bar text can be defined here (as a hexadecimal value without the hashtag).

Background colour

The background colour of the assessment body can be defined here (as a hexadecimal value without the hashtag).

Feedback font size (pass mark etc)

The font size of the assessment feedback can be amended here.

Used with non-flexible mode assessments.

Feedback text colour (pass mark etc)

The font colour of the assessment feedback can be amended here.

Used with non-flexible mode assessments.

Feedback value font size (100% etc)

The font size of the assessment feedback value (score) can be amended here.

Used with non-flexible mode assessments.

Feedback value text colour (100% etc)

The font colour of the assessment feedback value (score) can be amended here.

The amount of padding around the assessment feedback can be amended here.
