Getting started with editing Skillcast modules

Updated over a week ago

When you begin editing or building a module in the CMS Editor, it helps to remember that the work involves more than simply using the tool. To create high-quality learning experiences, you need to think about the structure of the module, the clarity of each layout, and the actions you want learners to take after completing the training. These choices will help you produce content that is purposeful, engaging and aligned with your organisation's goals.

Modifying an existing Skillcast module is often a great starting point. Many instructional and design decisions have already been made, so you can focus on adapting the content to your needs. Customising an existing course can feel more approachable than starting from a blank canvas.

Understanding the CMS Editor

The CMS Editor is a powerful tool that has evolved over many years as part of our in-house production workflow. Its flexibility gives you a high level of control over the look and feel of your modules, as well as the behaviours of different components.

Because it offers so much flexibility, some features may feel advanced or take time to get used to. If you encounter functions that seem complex at first, this is completely normal. Many new members of our Production Team spend several months building confidence with the tool before they feel fully comfortable.

Keeping this in mind can help you stay relaxed as you explore the Editor. Take time to experiment, test changes, and learn which patterns work best for your content and your learners.

Quality assurance considerations

As with any flexible content creation tool, it is possible to introduce issues unintentionally, especially when you are working with HTML or other code-based elements. To support smooth roll-outs, Skillcast carries out extensive quality assurance and testing before releasing any course.

When content is created or edited outside our Production Team, the QA process becomes a shared step. Your Account Manager or Customer Success Manager can guide you through the best approach to:

  • testing your module

  • checking that interactions work as expected

  • confirming that any tracking or completion rules are behaving correctly

  • making sure the course performs well across the required devices and browsers

Once you have a clear idea of your plans and how you want to use the Editor, it is helpful to discuss your quality assurance needs with your AM or CSM so that the right support can be arranged.

Conclusion

With thoughtful planning, a structured approach and the right support, you can use the CMS Editor to create high-quality learning experiences that meet your organisation's needs.
