Content Width and Content Container

Updated over a month ago

When building modules, content is created using elements. Each element includes Properties where you can set how much horizontal space it uses by adjusting the Block width. You will need Edit content permission to work in the Content Editor.

Content width

For two or more elements to sit side by side on the Module stage, their widths must add up to 100%. If they exceed 100%, they will automatically stack vertically.

Examples include:

  • A 50% width element placed next to another 50% width element

  • A 70% width element followed by a 50% width element, which will force the second element to wrap and appear below

Content container

A Content container acts as a bucket that holds a group of elements. Once added, all following elements will fill the container’s width instead of the Module stage width. To close the container, you must add a Close Container element.

Key points include:

  • Content containers are designed to hold more than one element, not single elements

  • Empty Content containers lead to errors, so remove the container when deleting its contents

  • If a page layout looks incorrect, check whether an empty container sits at the bottom of the page

Examples

  • Wrapping text and images inside a 50% Content container will keep them grouped on one side

  • Adding an element after a Close Container will return it to full Module stage width

  • If that last element is 50% width (or less), it will sit to the right of the container’s contents

Practical layout example

A common setup is placing text and an image in one Content container, with an activity on the opposite side:

  • Content container set to 50% width

  • Text element containing text at 100% width

  • Text element containing an image at 100% width

  • Close Container

  • Multiple Choice Question at 50% width

Multiple Content containers

If you require more than one Content container, only the final container needs to be closed. For example:

  • Content container at 50% width

  • Content element

  • Content element

  • Content container at 50% width

  • Content element

  • Content element

  • Close Container
