How to Add an Assessment to a Module

Updated over a week ago

Using an off-the-shelf module? You may want to edit an existing assessment

This guide will walk you through the steps to add an assessment to your module in the LMS. Whether you're editing an existing module or building one from scratch, these instructions will help you create effective assessments that support your learners' progress.

What Is an Assessment and Why Add One?

An assessment is a set of questions that helps you measure learners' understanding of your module's content. Most off-the-shelf modules already include an assessment. If you're creating a module from scratch, you'll need to add one yourself. Assessments help reinforce learning and provide valuable feedback to both you and your learners.

Before You Start

  • You need Edit content permission to access the Content editor.

  • If you haven't created a module yet, see the article on creating a new module.

  • To find an existing module, refer to the article on finding a module.

Step-by-Step: Adding an Assessment

  1. Locate your module.

    • Use the search or navigation tools to find the module you want to edit.

  2. Select "Edit content".

    • This option is on the right side of the page.

  3. Add the Assessment element.

    • From the element dropdown, choose Module: Assessment.

  4. Review and edit assessment properties.

    • All properties are pre-selected by default, but you can adjust them to suit your needs.

  5. Customise feedback messages.

    • Edit the Introduction, Passed, Retry, and Failed messages.

    • The Failed message only appears if you set an attempt limit.

  6. Create a Question Bank (QB).

    • At the bottom of the page, enter a name for your Question Bank. This folder will contain your questions.

    • You can create multiple QBs for different topics.

  7. Add the Question Bank.

    • Select the Add button to create your first Question Bank.

  8. Open your Question Bank.

    • Click the title of the Question Bank you just created.

  9. Set Question Bank properties.

    • At the top, you can delete, rename, or set the number of questions picked from this bank.

    • If you add a case statement, all questions in this bank should relate to it. For unrelated questions, create a new Question Bank.

    • Select Update after making changes.

  10. Add questions.

    • Below the case statement, add multiple choice questions.

  11. Enter your questions and options.

    • Fill in the Question and Options tabs.

    • Select the correct option(s).

    • Optionally, add an Explanation to be shown after the answer is submitted.

  12. Apply the correct text style.

    • Use the following styles for clarity:

      • assessment-question

      • assessment-option

      • assessment-explanation

    • For more on text styles, see the article on applying style to text.

  13. Add more questions as needed.

    • Select Add at the bottom of the page to include additional questions.

  14. Check the total number of questions.

    • Learners will answer the sum of all picked questions from all Question Banks.

    • For example, if you have five Question Banks and pick two questions from each, learners will answer ten questions.

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Preview your assessment: Before publishing, review all questions and settings to ensure accuracy.

  • Organise by topic: Use multiple Question Banks to group questions by theme or scenario.

  • Case statements: If using a case statement, ensure all related questions are grouped together.

Limitations

Note:

  • If creating a new module from scratch, you must include a welcome page because a module cannot consist of assessments only. You can add this by following the article on Module Templates.

  • You must have the correct permissions to edit content. If you're unable to access the Content editor, contact your Customer Success Manager via the help icon on your portal or email [email protected].

  • The Failed message only appears if you set an attempt limit for the assessment.

What Next?

Once you’ve finished adding or editing your assessment, refer to the article What do I do when I finish creating or editing my module? for guidance on publishing or further actions. If you need help, select "Send us a message" via the help icon on your portal or email [email protected].
