Adding an Assessment

Updated over a year ago

When making edits to an off-the-shelf module, an assessment is most likely already there. If you wish to edit an existing assessment, please see this article about Editing the assessment.

However, if you are building a module from scratch, you might need to add an assessment.

Kindly note that you need Edit content permission to access the Content editor.

1. Find the module you want to add an assessment to. You can follow the steps listed in the article about Finding a module. Please see this article about creating a new module if you haven't created one yet.

2. Select Edit content on the right side of the page.

3. From the element dropdown, add Module: Assessment.

4. The assessment properties are pre-selected by default, but all can be edited to your requirements.

5. Don't forget to edit Introduction, Passed, Retry and Failed messages. Failed message appears only if the assessment has an attempt limit.

6. At the bottom of the page, type a name for your Question Bank (QB). This will be the folder where your questions are contained. You can create multiple QBs for multiple topics.

7. Select the Add button. It will add the assessment and create the first Question Bank.

8. Select the title of the Question Bank that you just created.

9. At the top of the Question Bank are the properties. Here, you can delete the Question Bank, rename it, set the number of questions picked, and more.

The case statement is a scenario. So, if you choose to add a case statement, all questions in this Question Bank should relate to it. In the module, the case statement will appear on the left and the question on the right. If you need to add questions that do not relate to the case statement, please create another Question Bank.

Select the Update button any time you make changes to the Question Bank properties.

10. Right below the case statement, you can add Multiple choice questions.

11. Insert the Question and Options into the respective tabs. Don't forget to select the correct option(-s). You can choose to insert an Explanation too, which is shown after the user submits their answer.

12. Ensure the appropriate Style is assigned to the text:

  • assessment-question

  • assessment-option

  • assessment-explanation

To learn more about text Styles, please see this article about Applying Style to text.

13. Select the Add button at the bottom of the page. You can add as many questions as needed.

14. The number of questions the learners will need to answer is a sum of all picked questions from all Question Banks.

In the example below, there are five Question Banks with two questions picked from each Question Bank. So, the learners will need to answer 10 questions.

If you have completed all the module changes, please refer to the article titled What do I do when I finish creating or editing my module?.
