This guide clarifies commonly used terms within the Skillcast Platform.
Archived user | A user's profile status can be set to 'Archived' for various reasons, including the completion of activities in the portal or more commonly, if the user has left the business. Once an account is archived, the user can no longer access their account. |
Audience rules | Audience rules are criteria used to define and segment user groups. Administrators can create and manage rules by including or excluding specific domains, user attributes, or hire dates. Rules can combine multiple attributes and conditions, such as applying filters to domains and user data. |
Automatic assignments | This feature uses audience groups to allow training with a deadline to be assigned for existing users and new joiners. It also allows assigned training to be automatically reassigned on a regular basis (for example, annually). |
Bespoke content | A project that involves creating a custom-made module based on the client's specifications. Different levels of bespoke work are available to cater for different requirements. |
Category | A means of grouping learning paths to assist end users in navigating through their assigned activities. A category can be split up by adding sub-categories. |
CMS (Content Management System) | A software application located in the Management Console of the Skillcast LMS. It can be used to collaboratively create and manage all digital content. For more information on how to manage the CMS, visit |
Completion wheel
| A chart that displays information related to the number of completed, outstanding or overdue activities. There are typically two or three of these displayed at the top of the home page. |
Compliance Declarations | Declarations require employees to disclose work-related information through questionnaires enabling clients to collect, track and analyse disclosures/declarations effectively. For more information on Declarations, visit |
Compliance Journey | Compliance Journey is a collection of e-learning courses, policy attestations, surveys, declarations, and other compliance activities, designed to address specific compliance initiatives (e.g. financial crime, bribery prevention, data protection). These journeys are typically created in a learning path or a series of paths, allowing for customisation and the automation of compliance processes. |
Compliance Register tool | A Compliance Registers allows employees to submit and manage records, such as gifts, hospitality, conflicts, and breaches. Clients can customise the forms with adaptive fields, configurable approval workflows with automatic rules or escalation, and integrated email notifications. |
Compliance Survey tool | A compliance survey is a tool organisations use to assess adherence to laws, regulations, policies, and ethical standards. These surveys gather employees' perceptions, often including personal or contextual insights, and responses can be anonymised and analysed in aggregate. Results can be used to produce ratings, such as RAG (Red-Amber-Green) or scores, often displayed through graphical, interactive reports. |
CPD schemes | The Training 360 tool allows clients to set different CPD hour targets and set up structured versus unstructured hours for different parts of their business. Clients can set up one or more CPD schemes. For more information on CPD and the Training 360 tool, visit |
Customisation | A project that involves editing an off-the-shelf (OTS) module to suit the client's needs. Different levels of customisation work are available to cater for different requirements. |
Editable version | This is a local copy of Skillcast content in a client’s portal. Editable version can be added from "Your subscriptions" section. This option is ideal for clients looking to assign training as mandatory or make customisations. |
Event session | A feature on the Events Management System that allows an event to have multiple sessions. This provides a large audience with the option to book a session that suits their availability. Each event session can have a limit for the maximum and minimum number of attendees. Integration - Training Records | An add-on option that integrates staff training records or mandatory training assignments from the Skillcast Platform into the client's HR system. This removes the need for manual data transfers and ensures information is consistently kept up to date. The Platform can automatically process data on a pre-defined schedule (for example, daily or weekly). |
Integration - User Provisioning | An add-on option that automatically integrates the client's relevant HR data from their HR system into the Skillcast Platform. This removes the need for manual updates (as clients no longer need to manually adjust staff changes) and ensures information is consistently kept up to date. Learning path | A pre-defined route for learners to follow through a number of assigned activities or modules. They are assigned to end users in a home page category. A list of all learning paths can be viewed on the CMS. Note that when a module goes live, the learning path title is visible in the home page tile. |
Learning path activity | An activity that is part of a learning path. It could be an e-learning module, policy, hyperlink, document, event or offline activity. |
Learning path carousel | A section at the top of the home page that displays images. It can display either a single image or multiple images one at a time. |
Learning path pre-requisites | Functionality within a learning path that controls the sequence in which activities are accessed and completed. It ensures that an activity can only be accessed if the preceding activity has been successfully completed. |
Management Console | A section of the platform in which client administrators can manage their compliance needs. It is located on the home page and is available to all authorised client administrators. |
Module | A module is a unit of e-learning content created using the Content Management System (CMS). It serves as a building block for delivering training and must be incorporated into a learning path to be launched and accessed by users. |
My Activities page | As part of the Training 360 package, the 'My Activities*' page allows end users to log their offline activities and review their CPD hours. End users can also access the Certificates page here, which allows them to view their training records for incomplete and completed activities and download a certificate for any completed activities. |
Offline activity | An activity that is not e-learning, such as a classroom session, lecture or seminar. End users can log these activities in the “My Activities” page. |
Policy attestation | A feature of the Policy Hub that requires end users to formally declare that they acknowledge and agree to comply with a policy. Attestations can only be used with policies that are set as mandatory for the end user to read. Portal Domain | There are different portal domains available, these store different data such as staff data, reports, files shared, events, policies and content (learning paths and modules). |
Post-assessment | An assessment at the end of a module. It is mandatory for the learner to take this and achieve a passing score in order to complete the module. |
Pre-assessment | An assessment at the beginning of a module. It can be optional or mandatory for the learner to take. If the learner takes the pre-assessment and achieves a passing score, they can complete a shortened (fast-track) version of the course. |
Republish module | Functionality that makes any changes made in the editor visible in the live course. |
Rollout | The launch of a new tool, integration or training. |
Rollout matrix | A template plan in which training is scheduled to be launched on different dates. The plan may extend across the annual subscription. Your Customer Success Manager can provide you with a rollout matrix template. |
SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) | The finalised version of an e-learning product specifically formatted for compatibility with an LMS. |
Skillcast Academy | An educational platform that helps our clients use our products to implement and promote compliance in their workplace. It provides courses and tutorials on a wide range of topics for users of all experience levels. |
Skillcast Platform/Portal | A digital platform designed to facilitate the creation, delivery, management, and tracking of compliance training and other tools. |
Skillcast original | Available to clients who wish to launch all the training included in their subscription without customisation. Ideal for those who want the latest content available to all users as optional training. |
Skin | The visual design or appearance of a module's stage as well as everything surrounding the stage. It includes the navigation buttons, progress bar, background colour, icons, hyperlinks, buttons for menu, audio, pdf version and accessibility. It encompasses the overall look and feel of the course. |
Suspended content | Content that has been set to no longer be visible to the end users it was assigned to. |
Trainer Approval | The approval workflow in the Event Management or Training 360 determines whether an end user's registration for an event or offline activity needs to be approved by a supervisor. Clients can choose between automatic approval, line manager approval and L&D team approval. |
Training calendar | As part of the EMS tool, this page displays all event sessions accessible to end users. |
Translation | A project that involves translating the contents of a module into one or more other languages and then building a version of the module for each language. Different translation options are available (involving translation by AI, human or both) to cater for different requirements. |

Unique identifier | The item of staff data that distinguishes each user account from all other accounts. It can either be their employee number or email address. Its use prevents the creation of duplicate user accounts. |
User | An individual registered on the platform, included in the staff data, who can access courses, policies, and compliance activities. Users may have one or more roles, such as an End User (engaging with resources) or a Portal Admin User (managing and configuring the platform). |
User Attribute | The user data supplied by clients typically consists of attributes such as first name, last name and email address. Clients can choose to include additional attributes, such as job role and department, to improve LMS reporting filters and better target groups of end users for training rollouts. |
View as learner | Functionality that assists the LMS administrator while building or tailoring content in the editor as it allows them to review how the content will appear to the learner. |
